About Me
- Favorite Medium: paintings
- Statement: My goal as an artist has been making inner reality indistinguisable from outer experience. Travel has been highly influential, for movement outward in space is inward as well. A world perspective has given insight into the simultaneous existence of multiple views that affect perception and consciousness. In Japan I encountered the expressive power of simplicity, suggestion and nuance; the interrelatedness of all things, and finally, the dark, mysterious inner nature of the self, especially that of woman, who is seen as unknowable through rational processes, glimpsed only through artistic experience. To express these ideas the images have a basic format, first a situation experienced, indicated usually by a detail of a building, then the woman herself. She experiences the gamut of interior states that change by virtue of the pressure of an environment. Next I impose a flower, derived from Noh aesthetics, wherein hana, flower, is that which attracts through elegance, such as that expressed by the aristocrat with regal bearing, suggesting lingering charm that was the ideal beauty for classical Japanese poetry. It indicated a subtle, haunting beauty in the heart, difficult to know directly, so that only through the indirect means of poetry could its essence be revealed. Later the concept was refined to become sabi, the quiet, rustic beauty embodied in the spare, simple tea house, wherein the ritual of the Zen tea ceremony brought out subconscious beauty felt and responded to as that which perfects. These complexities are the evocations I seek in my paintings.
