About Me
- Favorite Medium: art photography
- Statement: After 35 years of making photographs, particularly in the area of inventing and reinventing the images of celebrities, I wanted to use photography and all of the new technology associated with it, to reveal more to me about who I am. The camera had always served me well as a tool to learn about the world, about others. Now, I wanted to address the question I think we all have asked ourselves numerous times: Who Am I?In my quest to investigate how identity is constructed, I began from the point of being a woman, as that was an undeniable fact of my existence. I considered how images of women throughout the history of art, cinematography, and mass media have influenced my dress, my expectations, my experiences of feeling 'separate' as well as those of being ""connected"" to others. I've always thought of the act of shopping as a means by which we 'girls' discover a kinship to who we could or should be. So, I began my quest by making photographs of clothing store windows in New York City. Based on the influences of the images of women throughout time, I added and subtracted elements from the window dressings. Then, I photographed myself using make-up, wigs, props and facial expressions and placed myself in all of the mannequin's roles, both male and female. I present the questions: How certain can we be of who someone is? Who do you become if you are not yourself? To what degree does the identity of an image depart from the identity of the person depicted? What is real? What is true?
