Statement: Joyce W. Bailey brings an extraordinary combination of talent, experience and academic excellence to her work. Trained as both an artist and art historian (and teacher of both), she has always found that one discipline informs the other--that the future of creativity evolves from the history of that activity. Central to her painting is the participation of the viewer in a positive, elevating aesthetic experience. Each work is concieved and executed to rejuvenate the senses everyday.The current subject matter, semi-abstract tropical florae, arises from her studies of this theme in the rain forest of the Peten (Mexico, Guatemala),the Caribbean and southern United States. Colors observed in tropical environments have special luminous qualities that ignite in full sun and are completely saturated in shade. In addition to the development of multi-layered transparent glazes in her work, the compositions seek to reveal the essence and unique quality of life of a tiny universe.
