About Me
- Favorite Medium: art photography
- Statement: I photograph in black-and-white, and then print the image on clear film, so that the result is like a large black-and-white slide. I then paint the reverse side of the film with acrylic paint and apply pastel and collage to a separate layer beneath. I invented this process in the 1970's and have been refining it ever since. I print the images from 18""x18"" to 40""x60"" in size. The layered process gives the image a striking three-dimensional quality.I am interested in the tension between the photograph, which is instantly rendered, and painting, which evolves over time. My work has explored the dichotomy of opposites: the hard and soft, the real and the artificial, the fixed and the mutable. Through means both photographic and painterly, I have sought to understand what lies beyond the appearance of things.
