About Me

  • Favorite Medium: sculpture
  • Statement: I find joy and inner piece pondering three-dimensional expression (sculpture in the round, assemblage, and wall sculpture). The intuitive revelation in the creative process of sculpting challenges the principal, the very élan vital. My sculptures in the round signify the tensions of life's uncertainties living on the edge, nanoseconds before motion, before it becomes something else. The works are poised, bracing the moment, reflecting the temporal. Although the sculptures have heavy top masses defying gravity, they are perfectly balanced and can stand without supports.I never cut down live trees to take wood for sculpture; all the woods are found or given. As wood grows, each tree has its own stresses, quiet periods, and spurts of growth that it brings to the sculpture. Trees can tell their own story by the characteristics in the texture, grain, and cracks. Wood is a living form; even a tree eaten by bugs, can be sculpted to tell its story of survival. As an art educator, I continue to be surprised and inspired by the students' self discoveries as the spirit of an art project unfolds and comes to life.
